The report, which integrated historical topographic maps and satellite imagery over 110 years, shockingly highlights that while grasslands have steadily vanished, forest cover has expanded dramatically—from a mere 0.6 square kilometers in 1913 to 229.2 square kilometers in 2023. While an increase in forest cover might seem beneficial, in Kaziranga’s unique floodplain ecosystem, it signals the loss of the open grasslands that are critical for the survival of its megaherbivore populations.

This final, stable stage is known as the “climax community.”

The grasslands represent a “sub-climax” stage, held in a delicate balance by powerful natural forces and, crucially, by active management.
